Improving cataract patient eye care

Alcon wanted to synthesize two outdated products into one powerful tool for eye cataract procedures. Alcon’s SmartCataract guides ophthalmologists in making the optimal cataract corrective lens choice, minimizing error and improving patient surgical outcomes.

We followed a four step design process: discovering insights through contextual immersion and on-site workshops, framing the opportunity area for a new and improved product experience, ideating design solutions, and building a clickable prototype for proof of concept testing.

Two weeks of contextual observation with ophthalmologists led to the creation of a journey map to illustrate how a single platform would better serve the user.  When building the new IA and sitemap, we focused on reducing redundancy and building intuitive pathways. A persistent secondary navigation was introduced as a progress tracker, outlining the patient journey in logical, sequential steps.

The end solution was a tool that enhanced productivity, efficiency, and accuracy.  The proof of concept was presented to 20 practicing ophthalmologists at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in Chicago. We ran a hands-on prototype demo with ophthalmologists navigating through an iPad Pro-based prototype and completing scenario-led tasks. Design revisions were made based on valuable prototype feedback, and the MVP SmartCataract platform was released. Today iterations are consistent, furthering advancing ophthalmologists’ efficiency in patient care.
